We’ve  just heard that Jonas Kaufmann has pulled out of tonight’s Andrea Chenier.

It’s the third of four performances.

His replacement is Luciano Ganci.

Will he make the final show?

No refunds.

  • A.L. says:

Hard to understand how or why various managements invite and then tolerate his never ending cancellations. Same thing with Harteros.

    • Sir Rudolph Bang says:

Mme. Caballé is available for only a limited number of cancellations this season

    • Okkie says:

Kaufmann’s name is still selling tickets. The opera houses don’t care if he doesn’t perform in the end – as long as they can find a replacement. Plus – if Jonas Kaufmann cancels one of the series of performances, then he won’t be back by the end of the series. See ROH Cavallieria rusticana/Pagliacci in July 2022. First he cancelled his participation in Cav and promised to perform at least in Pag and then he cancelled everything. I don’t think he will appear in the last performance of the Viennese Andrea Chenier on 9 December.

    • Alan says:

      The run sold out.

      That should answer your question.

    • Sue Sonata Form says:

They used to refer to Kleiber in Japan as the “cancellation devil”!! It’s all part of the ‘artistic temperament’.

    • Helen says:

Never ending cancellations. Name them. This year, I dare you.

    • guest says:

“Never ending”? This year only Cav/Pag for Covid 19 and he was not the only one. In the moment a lot of singers are ill, but only at K. they talk around! Disgusting.

  • Ms.Melody says:

Probably, healthy Ganci ( By no means great) is preferable to sick Kaufmann. I will never forget attending a 5 act version of Don Carlo at the Met when the tenor lost his voice in the prologue and literally croaked for the next four hours. I wonder if he ever sang a note again. Hopefully, Kaufmann will recover soon, but he is right to cancel if he is ill. After all he has his brand’s reputation to think about. Here is plan B(G)

  • STEPHEN BIRKIN says:

I wonder how he’d react if opera houses started cancelling him?

    • guest says:

Would not be wise by the opera houses. He would act the same. When you have a cold you can not sing. Those who know the ropes know that.

  • Mirabelle says:

Would you expect a ballet dancer to perform if they had flu?

  • John Aitken says:

It is such an awful production, no wonder Jonas cancelled. I saw it with Botha and it was really dreadful – virtually no direction.
