Tomorrow, they’ll be gathering candles in Estonia for Paavo Järvi’s 60th birthday.

No conductor in my recall has collected more airmiles.

Although relatively settled these days with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, he still flies off to conduct in Asia and America at the drop of an email. In his coming birthday year he will appear with the Concertgebouworkest in Amsterdam, Berlin Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Orchestre de Paris, London’s Philharmonia, New York Philharmonic, Hong Kong Phil and NHK Symphony Orchestra. Why? Because they asked for him.

As for the summer break, that is taken up with the Pärnu Music Festival with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra.

At 60, it’s still fly, fly, fly.

Happy birthday, Paavo.

Criminy, time doe fly! Paavo is 60! Seems like just yesterday he was a young kid taking over in Cincinnati. Now he’s a young senior citizen! Well Happy Birthday!

  • Larry W says:

Paavo Järvi studied with Leonid Grin at my school, the University of Houston School of Music. Lizzo went there also, and both are featured the same day on Slippedisc. Quite something.

  • Gustavo says:

But WHY don’t the Wieners ask him while Jakub and Andris have been welcomed to the club?

    • Concertgebouw79 says:

Sometimes we don’t have to understand the logic of the Winers. I gave it up. Why they never worked with the Jarvis, Chung or Ivan Fischer… why 19 times of 20 they call the bad Riccardo…

    • Petros Linardos says:

Paavo Järvi conducted the Vienna Philharmonic twice inn 2006, in Cologne and Paris, and once in 2014, in Salzburg. He is indeed not part of the VPO club.

  • Potter Herald says:

Pretty much sure that Gergiev is just laughing at your phrase about “Paavo’s airmiles”. I think with all flights Gergiev made , he could reach Pluto and still be a little to the evening rehearsal next day

  • Novagerio says:

Did they ever invite any of the Järvi mob?
One hint: the Viennese might not like conductors who open their scores right in front of the orchestra…

  • Guest 123 says:

Good for Paavo, but I’ve always found him terribly boring. I’m not sure who he’s fooled to get this far, but his performances lack spontaneity and emotion.

  • Violinist says:

I can’t help to quote Saruman, Paavo is a “lesser son of greater sire”. The conducting is OK but musically speaking calling him boring would be an understatement, Paavo seems utterly dead inside. Working with his father has always been joy, but having worked with Paavo for the first time last season, I can honestly say that I couldn’t care less if we never see him again

  • Singeril says:

60? In the old days, that would be considered a “kid” in the conducting world. Now, it’s still middle-age. Thankfully, it looks like he has the potential to be with us a long time…great that he’ll be bringing all that experience along with him.
