Friends are reporting the death yesterday of Bela Dekany, leader of the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Pierre Boulez, Gennady Rozhdestvensky and John Pritchard.

Bela was 94.

A Holocaust survivor from Hungary, he formed a Dekany String Quartet in Holland in the 1960s before joining the BBC as concertmaster of its flagship orchestra in 1969.

    Remember him so warmly. So many of these wonderful guys around at the time. As years have passed, I had forgotten – when I shouldn’t have done – that he was also a holocaust surviver too. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen. ..

    One of the greats. He was on the Bruckner 5/Wand BBCSO live 1990 Proms concert.

    Such a pity that the BBC hasn’t even commented on TV news or its website that “one of their own” has passed. Obsessed with ‘pop’ culture and football. A name so well known to me for years when I didn’t even know he was a holocaust survivor – all the more reason for him to be remembered. RIP.
