The Hessian State Theater in Wiesbaden has announced the end of Uwe-Eric Laufenberg’s directorship in 2024.

Laufenberg, 61, will have been in the job for 11 years.

He will be replaced by Dorothea Hartmann, a member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin team since 2012, and Beate Hein, deputy director at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg.

The state arts minister Angela Dorn said: ‘With Dorothea Hartmann and Beate Heine, we have been able to win two strong theatre women.’

In Germany, apparently, you can still say such things.

So “es isch over” to quote Schäuble. Good choice with the two women. In the corona-years Laufenberg had a few corona-denying-similar turns and marked the place old-white-man-behaving. So we hope for a lot of improvements with the female bosses.

Laufenberg assumed his term in Wiesbaden in 2014-15. He apparently rattled some audience members; a local I spoke to in June 2015 complained about the productions and claimed that subscriptions were down by 40%. But I was pleased with the Bluebeard’s Castle I saw, with second cast Gerd Grochowski and Asmik Grigorian. Is Laufenberg going freelance?

Interestingly, quite a few performances later in the season at Wiesbaden (including a Tannhauser that I was planning to catch) are now marked as “not bookable”. I understand that money disputes were at the root of Laufenberg’s departure. So is the season going to be slashed?
