A mortal mudslide caused by heavy rains on the island of Ischia, near Naples, has claimed several lives, perhaps as many as eight people, according to latest reports. Around 13 are missing.

In an immediate reponse, the Teatro San Carlo di Napoli has called off the opening night of Verdi’s Don Carlo as an act of mourning.

The US soprano Ailyn Perez, cast as Elisabetta, messaged: ‘Our hearts and prayers are with the people of Ischia.’

In the immortal words of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, “We need a futile gesture at this stage.”

Better to donate the proceeds of the ticket sales etc., no?

    • Carl says:

An act of mourning is to not be enjoying yourself when others are grieving so the cancellation is an act of sensitivity towards the grieving families. The money is a complete side issue. I never ever comment on social media but Del Boys note was passive aggressive mean(my opinion).

Absolutely, and alarmingly it is the sort of comment which turns up frequently on slippeddisc, sometimes from Norman Lebrect himself.

Take a look at comments on Teatro San Carlo FB. Most of them are positively nauseating. But this basically confirms my opinion about the classical music audience.
