The Bavarian State Opera was due to give the premiere of Toshio Hosokawa’s Matsukaze in May 2023.

It has now been pushed back to 2024.

‘We are in a time of upheaval and have to deal with the resulting consequences that cause planning risks and make it difficult to carry out theatre and opera productions,’ said intendant Serge Dorny.

He sounds keen.

Normal Lebrecht, you really are the music critic with the least knowledge, the world premiere was in Brussels in 2011

  • MMcGrath says:

Sounds like he knows his business and has a feeling there are likely upcoming funding cuts.

  • RW2013 says:

    World premiere?!
Tell that to the opera houses in Brussels, Warsaw, Luxembourg, Berlin…

The full story you can find in the Abendzeitung, article of Robert Braunmüller: https://www.abendzeitung-muenchen.de/kultur/buehne/staatsoper-muss-premiere-verschieben-haussegen-in-schiefer-lage-art-858030

Interesting is also that Dorny fired the chorus director and is known for less communication or less exchange with his departments bosses before taking a decision than it was Bachler. For my opinion it is very sad that he had to postpone Hosokawa because the success of Haas was tremendous and much more intense as The Nose or Les Troyens. And Norman, Neuinszenierung as mentioned in Abendzeitung is not world premiere.

The usual Dorny stories, plus a particularly noteworth remark: It is politically fatal to sacrifice a current opera when at the same time already preparations for the white elephant of all theatre managers and music directors are under way again. Ring, Ring, why don’t you give me a call?

    • Anthony Sayer says:

No, it just means ‘new production’.

  • Anthony Sayer says:

Can anyone explain Germany’s obsession with making Serge Dorny even wealthier than he already is? He obviously learned a lot from Mortier when it comes to using contemporary opera to showboat your right-on classical credentials. He has also clearly understood how to extract vast sums of French taxpayers’ money by clicking his fingers, as evidenced by his time in Lyon, which also – allegedly(!) – demonstrated what an appalling man-manager he was. His disdain of anyone below him became legendary in France during that time.

Nonetheless, Dresden wanted him. Our friend Christian Thielemann was there at the time, who would surely not be surprised at the quote I’m copying and pasting from Buschtrommel’s provided link:

sondern auch von Konflikten zwischen dem Verwaltungsdirektor und dem wenig betriebswirtschaftlich denkenden Intendanten.

Dorny left, his pockets full, and resumed his former position in Lyon, which had been kept open during his absence. You couldn’t make this up. Now he’s in Munich, the richest and most prestigious house in Germany (sorry, Danny). How – or rather, why – does this work, seeing as the above quote is from Bavaria, not Sachsen-Anhalt.
