The BBC has appointed the director of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Simon Webb, to the new post of  Head of Orchestras and Choirs. Since the BBC’s DG Tim Davie has told the orchestras that the organisation cannot afford to keep them all, you wonder how many ensembles Webb will have t look after by 2025. However, even if there is only one orch left, he will still hold the title of  Head of Orchestras and Choirs.

The BBC never abolishes an executive role.

Webb, a former London Philharmonic cellist, takes up his new role in January.

The press release says: Simon will develop a creative strategy for the BBC Orchestras and Choirs, create an ambitious education and outreach programme, and lead on the work to innovate and develop future audiences. He will identify and develop partnerships, both internally and externally across the UK, and together with Controller, Radio 3 and BBC Proms, maximise opportunities for new, emerging and diverse talent, and play a leading role in developing a fully inclusive sector.

    A calamitous appointment.

    Why? Please expand.

You’d best ask the 28 year old novice he’s just put in charge in his place (no due process, just back scratching).
The arts scene in this country is now in the hands of charlatan opportunists and asset strippers.

  • Scorn says:

The Press Release doesn’t give one much hope that any orchestra or choir is going to be employing people based purely on talent. As is evident with all the BBC does, box ticking quotas win every day. That said Mr. Webb looks as though he doesn’t tick many diversity boxes.

He’s probably yet another brainwashed woke liberal.

    • Anon says:

Yes. Meritocracy has totally disappeared from the BBC, especially in the numerous orchestras. Look to the self governing London orchestral scene – meritocracy is essential for survival. But many folk do not realise this fact. Nor want to…

I believe that classical music performance is one rare profession where anything short of excellence (the best qualified applicant), will guarantee any failure to progress, or bag decent jobs. We would be crazy to employ duffers.

  • Rob Keeley says:

The leaden boilerplate of diversity – who knew?

OMG, what do these phrases even mean ?

  • NightFlight says:

    Congratulations and good luck Simon!
