Zurich Opera’s incoming intendant Matthias Schulz has extended the contract of music director Gianandrea Noseda for three more years.

Schulz, who arrives from Berlin’s Staatsoper under den Linden, is acutely aware that Berlin is on the lookout for Barenboim’s successor. He says: ‘Gianandrea Noseda is one of the most distinguished conductors of our time, equally at home at the opera as he is in concert. He has succeeded in leaving a formative artistic impression within the space of just a few months of his first term as Music Director of the
Opernhaus Zürich. He enjoys a high level of acceptance and recognition with Opernhaus staff, audiences, and the media. His winning personality and high level of professionalism have enabled him to establish a close relationship with all artistic ensembles. I am very much looking forward to continuing this successful work and to developing new programming with him’.

Noseda is wonderful. They’re lucky to have him.

  • Mock Mahler says:

He seems happy in his current situation(s). He has extended at Washington National Symphony as well. (And last week’s Prokofiev 6 showed they’re very fortunate to have him.)

  • MacroV says:

Good for them. I have long felt the NSO is a group of capable musicians but not much of an orchestra, but they have sounded great with him these past couple years.

Not much he can do about the dreadful vibe of the Kennedy Center, though.

  • Jon H says:

Even more reason to make great music – because we’re not going there to hear perfect resonance.
