The Metropolitan Opera has appointed Juilliard graduate Angela Wee as Associate Concertmaster of its orchestra.

New York born, she studied with Donald Weilerstein and Masao Kawasaki at Juilliard and was concertmaster of the college orchestra.

She auditioned for the Met the day after her return from a six-week Asian tour with the London Symphony Orchestra and its departing music director (pictured).

I recorded Angela when she was 16, and I remember thinking what a fantastic talent she was at that time. No surprise!

  • Sam says:

That’s incorrect and you should retract both the headline and the article. She is the new PRINCIPAL ASSOCIATE CONCERTMASTER. This was the chair held by Laura Hamilton.

What are the duties of an associate concertmaster?

    • Peter says:

I don’t know, but it sounds all very official, kinda like being a mall cop. They take their jobs VERY seriously…bless their little souls.

  • ChrysanthemumFan says:

Whom is she replacing? (Forgive my ignorance.)

    Who is the unnamed dude?
Looks like Sir Simon Rattle, LSO, Berlin, and CBSO.

  • Althea T-H says:

Why not use the traditional British, gender-neutral term, ‘Leader’?
