Lou Gehrig’s Disease claims a vital US conductor, 66

The influential conductor Thomas Sleeper died this weekend of ALS amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, which he contracted in 2019.

As professor at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music and conductor of the Frost Symphony Orchestra he raised two generations of professional musicians with careers around the world. He also inspired great deapth of affection, as testified by his Facebook page.

    Known as Motor Neurone Disease in the UK. An appalling disease.

    My uncle died of ALS.
    The worst thing (out of many horrible things about this illness) is that the mind remains fully active while the body disintegrates. (That’s what I observed in his case, anyway.)
    I don’t know if I could handle it as well as my Uncle Gordy did.
