The finals are on Sunday.
Were Russian singers suddenly horrible, or they were discriminated against? It is not fair to punish thousand and thousand of people for the sins of one little man. Art is exempt from pettiness!
Well, Vasily Sokolov (Russia) has been excluded from the competition after being admitted and after he arrived to Riga. Apparently under the pressure of local art politicians.
Now they do the same that they did at the Moniuszko competition when they excluded all the Russians, who would be residents either in Russia or abroad.
There is some very fine talent on the list of finalists. I’m particularly happy to see Mr. Duke Kim’s name on the list. I had the pleasure of working with him at the Palm Beach Opera about three years ago. A really, really impressive young man is he.
Very surprised to see Nils Wanderer there. His intonation is problematic most of the time, or so it was when he sang at the Montreal competition last June. He made the Finals there as well and I absolutely don’t know why.
Oliver, give chances to young singers: nobody is a machine and nobody performs equally good or bad twice. Every day is a new day in this sport called “singing the competition”.
I do not know Nils, but maybe he worked hard last months and improved a lot.
