The widely travelled Alexander Kouguell died October 2, at the age of 102.

Born in Russia, he studied in Beirut and Paris and moved to New York in 1946. Early on, he taught at the Peabody Conservatory of Music and played assistant principal cello in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

In 1949 he joined the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College and taught there until 1990 when he retired, returning until 2017 as an adjunct. He was also was a member of the Silvermine Quartet, along with violinists Paul Wolfe and Joseph Schor and violist Jacob Glick.
