  • RW2013 says:

    If only F W-M was a novelty…

    • Concertgebouw79 says:

The Winer Phil. is not the kind of places for novelty and audacity. Next year it would a good start if they call Jordan. I don’t ask anymore them anymore to call Ivan Fischer or Chung and to find a date with Chailly.

      • Novagerio says:

Concertgebouw79 You really don’t live in this planet Earth, do you? The conductors you mention have no connection nor history with the famous pit-orchestra at Vienna State Opera whatsoever, so….Just keep dreaming….

        • Concertgebouw79 says:

I’am not dreaming I’am jocking with irony. And You should know that Chailly did several concerts with the Winer and normally he will do somes in June 23.

        • Vienna calling says:

Novagerio, wouldn’t the fact that Jordan is the boss of the famous pit-orchestra in the pit constitute a tiny connection?

          • Novagerio says:

Vienna calling: I still believe “the famous pit-orchestra” might have something to say, especially the board of players in the Phil, who choose their New Year-Concert conductors.

      • Tristan says:

sorry non of your choices and the only exciting would be Kiril Petrenko

      • Gustavo says:

And Neeme Järvi who is a brilliant Waltzing King.

    • lamed says:

He is bland. That is my conclusion after all these years of listening to him. Vanilla ice cream is comforting for a lot of people and it is a perennial favorite. I respect that. If you know going into a dinner that you’ll always end the meal with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, then you cannot ever be disappointed.

  • Concertgebouw79 says:

To be frank rather than see one more time Franz Welser-Möst the first January, a thing he does quite well even if it’s not like with Zubin. I would prefer to see him in tour in Europe with the great Cleveland Orchestra I regret to never have seen.

    • perturbo says:

Well, you just missed the FWM/Cleveland Orchestra tour. They came home last week, and this week’s concert is Mahler 2, with the original manuscript on exhibit and now owned by the orchestra.

  • Fernandel says:

Welser-Möst is a fine musician but a real spoilsport. His previous New Year’s Concerts tasted like poultry broth.

  • Garry Humphreys says:

What’s a multiple asterisked novelty? And what is the significance of the one without an asterisk (not to mention no. 10, with a parenthetical asterisk)? Something lost in translation perhaps?

    • Ziobrifa says:

Heiterer Muth and Aquarellen Walzer have already been performed in NYC. it is an incredible programm, full of novelties!

    • Chantatur says:

I think I have after 10 minutes realised that the asterisk means first perf at a Neujahrskonzert (unlikely, for every item but one, but possible). ‘Novelty’ was not clear, and the overused ‘multiple’ made me look for items with more than one asterisk. I still don’t know whether the parentheses round one asterisk are significant.

  • soavemusica says:

I wonder, if there will be any encores. Two, even.

I`m fine with Carlos Kleiber conducting “Sphärenklänge”, literally 30 years ago.

  • MMcGrath says:

Asterisks and politics and pseudo-intellectualism govern the rarified world of Austrian Musak on New Year‘s Day. Next they will signal who’s conducting using white smoke.
As one gentleman told me in Salzburg this summer: „A lot of what happens today has to do with the truncation of the empire after WW1.“. I almost dropped my Nockerl.

  • Sam says:

The real question is how many women will they trot out on stage this year. 8? 10? And you can be sure that the cameras will focus on them so as to give a skewed picture of progress in the orchestra.

  • Violinista says:

G W-M is engaged for 01.01.23. for many reasons, not least for other engagements, recording and broadcast contracts. He is not worthy to stand on the podium before the VPO.

  • Greg Bottini says:

Unless there is an actively involved conductor such as Karajan, Harnoncourt, or Maazel at the helm, and not merely an avuncular “I’m-just-happy-to-be-here” time beater, the novelties are what make the NYE concert interesting!
(Although I’m always curious to see how the conductor handles the audience clap-along in the Radetzky March.)

    • Anthony Sayer says:

Harnoncourt, however interesting he often was, was awful in the NYC. He had nothing to say about this music.

  • chris says:

    Besides Cleveland and Vienna where
does anybody see this man ? I live
    in Pittsburgh and though Cleveland
is only 135 miles away he’s never
    once conducted here . I guess he’s
the reason to go to Cleveland !

    • Scott KC says:

His Cleveland Orchestra is the best in the world. Chamber music ensemble playing, brilliant section leaders, power always in reserve when needed.

  • Ed says:

Impossible to forget the great Willi Boskovsky.

  • Chantatur says:

Or André Rieu – imagine the rights income from all those showings on Sky Arts!
