Moscow mourns a musicologist
RIPThe death of Lev Ginzburg, aged 91, severs a golden link in the chain of musical transmission in Russia.
Son of the brilliant, semi-suppressed pianist Grigory Ginsburg, Lev was an uncompromising teacher, critic and communicator at the heart of Moscow’s musical life. He would occasionally contact Slipped Disc with insights, information and an entirely original perspective.
The funeral will be held tomorrow, Thursday, starting at 11 from the small hall of the Philharmonic.

Nowadays, when there is almost no professional music criticism in Russia, it is necessary to remember that L. G. Ginsburg has been one of the leading specialists in the field for decades. A man of infinite kindness and benevolence, he attracted young musicians to him, for whom he was an incontestable authority.’
An insightful scholar whose thoughts have permeated Russian musical thinking for the greater part of the last half-century. A loss to musicology and Russian music studies indeed.
