Gustavo Dudamel was appointed an officer of the Order of Arts and Letters by the President of France on Saturday night after conducting a season-opening performance of Puccini’s Tosca at the Opéra de Paris.

The LA Phil was quick to congratulate him.

Dude, who lives in Spain does a job share between LA and Paris.

You better not boo his performances, as an Officer, he can arrest you for disorderly conduct.

That’s the good thing about working in Europe, you get all sorts of knighthoods and shiny medals; in the US, the best you can hope for is to throw out the opening pitch at a baseball game and get a baseball shirt with your name on it.

One you can put on your résumé, the other, well, I suppose you COULD say you pitched for the Yankees…

one last comment on this topic, I swear: Dudamel is wont to pose these days with a finger to his temple (it’s also on his latest album cover) to signify, see, I’m more than just a haircut (as Muti, of all people, snarkily suggests), I have a brain too

    • Lothario Hunter says:

Oh yes, yes! Very well said!

And Muti is more obsessed with ‘hair’, in unexpected daring ways that only a few lucky (or unlucky) people are cognizant of … but in Chicago, we know! 😉

  • RW2013 says:

Time to start those French lessons.

  • Lothario Hunter says:

    Congratulations, Maestro Dudamel!

Now, THAT’s an honor that one can proudly list on a biography and website!

Unlike the Order of Friendship that Muti received from Putin, and that the CSO printed and boasted about on their program for a decade, even on the night of the now notorious phony ‘bloody tank’ Chicago speech!

Almost six month after the speech, Muti is still hanging tight to his Putin Order of Friendship, and to the honorary membership of the Russian Academy for the Arts, a second Russian honor received at the end of 2021.

And the picture, have you eyes? Manly dignity and fair grace, not doomed bromance. Look you now, compare it with this:

A picture says a thousand words, including those that cannot be pronounced in public! 😉

    • Angelos says:

on the second pic, a soundtrack would have done it:

      “Lovely, don’t you ever change
      Keep that breathless charm
      Won’t you please arrange it?
      ‘Cause I love you
A-just the way you look tonight”

Not to dwell on this, but the source of your file in the link is the Kremlin’s official website apparently, according to wikimedia.org. just saying

    *Yawn*

  • Herr Forkenspoon says:

I read the headline and thought those two were in a wrestling match.

  • M McGrath says:

Mais bien sur! Many get the Ordre – chevalier, officier, commandeur. So depending on his performance in Paris, he might qualify for a promotion in future! Good on him!

  • Ernest says:

A dime a dozen. Nothing to crow about.

    Pretty good.

Get a *Légion d’honneur* and you’ll be up to Jerry Lewis’s level.

  • Jobim75 says:

Really, who cares? War in Ukraine, power cuts to come, crisis wherever you look in the country…..they still enjoy champagne and macarons on a very average conductor, it sounds a bit like Titanic….
