The Bayreuth boss has admitted to local media that there is a culture of sexual aggression towards women at the festival. She was herself assaulted, she says, and takes all complaints very seriously.

  • David Leibowitz says:

You don’t consider “casual groping” to be serious? What is “casual” about groping someone??

    • JR says:

So far 7 people are fine with groping. Would one of them care to clarify why it’s no big deal?

      • Jim C. says:

I think it’s because it may not really be “groping.”

Is there a sudden epidemic of this now, or misinterpretation?

Also — and I’m not just being facetious here — why would largely gay audiences be groping women?

  • Gustavo says:

    All details please!

    Names and confirmative evidence.

    Thanks.

    • Tamino says:

Yes. Nothing good ever comes from these vague gossip like accusations. Name the offender. State the offence clearly. Give them room for stating their version.
And do it right away. Not years later.

One person‘s courting is another person‘s sexual assault.
Where there is social interaction, there are miscommunication and behavioral mistakes.

  • Gustavo says:

Hey, but what do we expect given the genesis of the whole festival?

Wagner’s works are male-biased, brutal, and sexist by definition.

  • Alviano says:

Shouldn’t be surprising. People come from all over to a relatively small and relatively isolated town. They meet lots of new people and work intensively. And they are leaving in a few months or weeks, so they feel free to do things they would not normally do. I am sure other festivals are the same.

  • IP says:

That’s what they all say after the boos for the staging (or equivalent).

And who would grope her anyway?

  • Freewheeler says:

“Sexual Assault” these days could mean a construction worker whistled at her from the second floor across the street.

  • Thomas M. says:

Is she the one who tried to drown herself recently?
