Just in: Kaufmann cancels London with Covid

The Royal Opera House today announces that sadly Jonas Kaufmann has withdrawn from all performances of Cavalleria rusticana. Mr. Kaufmann is continuing to recover from COVID-19 and is not well enough to sing the remaining performances.
SeokJong Baek will sing the role of Turiddu in the remaining performances of Cavalleria rusticana following critical acclaim at opening night…
Roberto Alagna will sing the role of Canio in Pagliacci on Monday 11 July, and Italian tenor Fabio Sartori will sing the role of Canio in the remaining performances on 14, 17 and 20 July.
I was right that Jonas Kaufmann would cancel his participation in Cavalleria rusticana altogether. It was predictable.
It is disappointing but expected. I have tickets for the 11th and was hoping he might make it. The whole production has been dogged by Covid. It is rife in this country at the moment. Some people are testing positive and not having any symptoms while others are quite unwell. Mr Kaufmann has always been a bit susceptible to colds ect. He has been incredibly busy over the past few months so maybe he was tired and therefore more susceptible. I wish him well.
I wish him well, but whwenever I try to see him, he withdraws. It is simply not serious. It has happened twice to me.
I saw him 14 times during the last 13 months. What you are telling us isn’t the case.

This is a question for theater management. It would be fair if they returned the difference in price for such replacements.
On the other hand, what if this is the same chance for an unknown tenor as Kaufmann had in “La Traviata” MET 2006. And many years later you will remember that you were present at the birth of a star…

A lot of very sick people around with Covid inspite of being vaccinated, and and then Long-Covid too for months. Wish him a full recovery.
