America’s Nadine Sierra to headline France’s Bastille Day
NewsSoloists have been announced for the national July 14 concert from the Eiffel Tower.
Top of the bill is soprano Nadine Sierra, with Lea Desandre (soprano), Stanislas de Barbeyrac (tenor) and Erwin Schrott (bass-baritone).
Other soloists are Alice Sara Ott (piano), Gautier Capuçon (cello) and Leonidas Kavakos (violin).
The Orchestre National de France is conducted by Cristian Măcelaru.
Allons, enfants de la patrie.
Good program good artists. Nice place and a popular event with the crowd and on tv. Very good idea to invit Alice Sara Ott and Kavakos who are rares in France but during this concert I always regret that the artists are playing during a too short time on stage. Last year I remember that they played 5mn of Daphnis (why not all one of the two suites?!) and just after somone was singing Verdi. I prefer the concerts at the Duomo and at the Waldbhune or at the Openplatz with more times for the artists on stage and a real thematic.
Kavakos plays quite regularly with Radio France.
This is a popular event and always a kind of Greatest Hits show where no one will sit through a whole symphony. But artists are good and it gives prime time exposure to classical music on TV. Compare to the musical horrors during the 4th of July fireworks in NY on NBC !
France is America’s oldest ally.
Léa Desandre is a mezzo (and a gifted one).
American Jessye Norman gave a stirring and now-legendary performance of the Marseillaise at the national Bastille Day celebration in 1989–the bicentenntial of the French Revolution. Presumably her nationality was not an issue.
One word: Booooring
Boring soprano, boring conductor… boring cellist, boring everything
Vive la France!
Sierra is wonderful!!
Opera Magazine Readers’ 2023 Award was presented to American soprano Nadine Sierra, in the only award of the evening voted for by the public.
