In her first foreign-policy interview since stepping down as German Chancellor, Frau Merkel spoke out this week against a boycott of Russian culture and artists.

However, she singled out the soprano Anna Netrebko as someone she would not invite to dinner.

‘Politically, she has already done things that I absolutely condemn,’ said Merkel, giving no further details.

Good for Merkel. No matter how Netrebko’s publicists frame it for her, she remains an insincere, self-centered, crass opportunist.

  • Maria says:

Does Angela Merkel really have to be so blatent and hateful, and as a practising Christian herself? And it really need to be on here, and all ready to be taken out of context and more unnecessary Netrebko-bashing?

  • IP says:

Sure. I vividly remember Netrebko building Nord Stream 2.

Really?? That’s the best you can offer after the slaughter and dislocation of thousands of human beings?

On the other hand, I’d invite Mrs. Merkel for dinner anytime she’s free….

Can someone please explain how and why Merkel’s opinion on anything is relevant nowadays? Is she an active political figure? No, a has been. Is she a music connoisseur? She chose music by a punk rocker for her farewell ceremony… Yeah, in a way she is… Maybe she should just stay where she is and not butt into the world of classical music she has no idea about? Anna is a star, and Merkel’s jig is up.

  • austria for a corrupt century says:

Austria’s reputation as a hub for legal espionage and shadowy business practices and as a haven for the elite, including wealthy Russians, dates to the decades following World War II — a function of opaque corporate regulations and generous tax laws, not to mention Vienna’s draw for spies and foreign intelligence services.
That atmosphere persists to this day.

Merkel is a shameless opportunist. She and her government sucked up to Putin for years, even after the crimea annexation. She didn´t even condemn the annexation. She made numerous deals with him, nordstream 2 being only the tip of the iceberg…She always was a hypocritical, lying scumbag.A macchiavellistic, power hungry ,highly incompetent ,cynical power politician, hiding behind her aunt like mask.

Alas, I fear not. The combination of “Netrebko” and “Merkel” in one headline can guarantee a tsunami of prolix bile fests from the usual suspects.
