The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has called off tonight’s concert.

The decision to cancel the performance comes after a positive COVID-19 test result today for Muti, who has been testing daily in accordance with CSOA safety protocols. Due to the test result, he will be unable to lead upcoming CSO performances on April 7, 8, 9 and 12, but the Orchestra and pianist Leif Ove Andsnes are expected to perform on these dates, with updated program information available soon.

Muti is experiencing mild symptoms, is in good spirits, and may be able to resume some of his other activities, following current CDC guidelines, before his current residency concludes on April 12. Muti said: “I hope to be back as soon as possible and am looking forward to once again sharing music with the public in Chicago.”

Oh dear, I hope he recovers soon.

  • Christoph says:

I worry for the countless musicians and staffers who must have come in contact with him. He never wore a mask in performances or rehearsals, even when the rest of the orchestra did (it’s spottier now). I guess we’ll see the impact in the coming days.

    • Lothario Hunter says:

I would not stress over it, sport. Alexander hand picks the staffers whose job description is to be in close contact with him.

Oh, tú, tú eres el imán y yo soy el metal
Me voy acercando y voy armando el plan
Solo con pensarlo se acelera el pulso …

    • Sashimi says:

Rumor has it that multiple musicians have also tested positive and apparently the source of the virus was in the first violin section.

    • Sue Sonata Form says:

My son caught Covid but his wife did not. There’s no guarantee of catching it even when a close contact. We were in contact with him and we did not get it either.

  • BigSir says:

Photo Caption: Muti: “Mayor Lightfoot, the key of C is not is not worse than the Key of A or B. It’s really not the same as the report cards you used to get. It is respectable to compose in the key of C, not second rate at all.”

Unnecessary and unsustainable as a health or social or economic matter.

Omicron variant 2 is simply too contagious, but generally not dangerous beyond mild symptoms, if even.

First, in order for masking to work, one must NEVER take off the N95 respirator around anyone else, not even family, not even at home. But who does that?

As for isolation, it makes others FEEL safer, but the REAL threat could still come when you are dining at home with family and friends while unmasked.

If the general population is already boostered, and in the US, those over 50 can now be double boostered, that is as good a level of protecton as we can get, short of quarantining the entire city of Chicago, which is what China would (try) to do.

I realize in advance that my comment may be censored by NL, the most tolerant and open minded free speech supporter, editor and moderator of this site.

However, I cannot be silent and must attempt to express my deepest desire for this virus to not only destroy Muti’s “certainty of spirituality” (x) , but to perform a thorough and methodical job at the bare biological level, delivering the deepest blow to this maestro who has derided the suffering of so many human beings, and in all likelihood spread the virus to others because he refuses to wear a mask, ever (except in the picture above to hypocritically appease the Mayor of Chicago). I do not wish him to die, obviously, but I wish him to really feel a punch in his bones and lungs.

But, I am afraid that will not happen. Like Trump, he is already receiving the very best VIP treatments that Chicago and America have to offer.

  • Chicagoan says:

I suppose he’ll be flying home to Italy for medical treatment. We won’t see him here in Chicago for a long while.

    • Chuck says:

I presume he would be involved in this though:

      “Section Viola (2 positions)

      Preliminary auditions: Scheduled for April 18, 21, 25, 28, 2022.

Final audition: Tentatively scheduled for May 2, 2022”

  • John Chunch says:

    Muti = Trump…

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

It’s serious for Muti as my 40y/o son, vaccinated to the hilt, recently caught Covid and was sick as a dog for a week.

  • GCMP says:

Why is there no assistant conductor? Could have been a breakthrough.
