Prawn cocktail, or English composer? You decide

Album Of The Week

From the new Lebrecht Album of the Week:

A Times obituary this week for Joseph Horovitz reckons that he could not decide if he was a composer of serious or light music. The same could be said of most of his contemporaries. An unexpected album of mid-century piano concertos delivers a prawn cocktail of exceptionally competent music without much by way of intellectual nutrients.

I’m really looking forward to Heather Hill for Strong ( sic) Orchestra

  • John Borstlap says:

If music does not fit into a well-known box, that is a compliment.

    Boxes suffocate music.

  • Tony Britten says:

It seems that Joe Horovitz is not actually represented on this new Album, so why use him as a cheap soundbite to introduce your review? The composers represented are all good, the project valid, the bitchy reference to Joe not knowing whether he was ‘light’ or ‘serious’ totally invalid. He was a fine composer, a great teacher and a truly wonderful man. Show respect please? The Times line on this may not be reliable.

  • RW2013 says:

Many enjoyable concertos here, most of them I know from the excellent Hyperion edition.
