The best way to make a wealthy retirement :sell a violin that every “music lover” will take for valuable.

Well long-term he can hardly take it with him.

Indeed, and I myself have started to wonder if at age 70 I really need seven violins and a viola in the house (note to would-be jokers: the viola stays). His most famous recordings would have been made with a prior instrument if he acquired this one in 2008. His most famous of all of course is the Bach Double with his teacher, Zino Francescatti.

I wonder what he paid for it.

  • Gerry Feinsteen says:

4mil for a del Gesu? That would be a steal. More like 7mil or more.
quite a few del Gesu violins have gone into double-digit millions.
They are far rarer than Strads, and Picassos.

  • Giora Schmidt says:

@Gerry and @Oliver the condition of the fiddle is far from ideal hence the price. Big back crack among others (might be well repaired) but still affects the overall $$$$.
