Dutch sub Finn kid for Gergiev
NewsThe Rotterdam Philharmonic has replaced Valery Gergiev in two concerts next month with the latest Finn off the ice-pack.
His name is Tarmo Peltokoski and he is 21 years old (agented by Tanja Dorn).
Yuja Wang, who was meant to play Strauss’s Burleske in the concerts, has switched to some lighter Rachmaninov.
She loves to play with Gergiev, only last September infact.

Like my doctors, I want my conductors to be older and wiser than me. I want someone with real life experience, not a freshly framed fancy diploma.
I want to hear Bruckner, not my 18 year-old grandson’s discovery of Bruckner when he was 17 years old.

Yes dammit, how dare they give a chance to an up and coming, talented young conductor! Instead of developing his potential in the concert hall we should cancel him and make him wait till he has at least 60 years of life experiences until he has the emotional maturity to be considered for a Bruckner gig …
. . . many Bruckner enthusiasts are also card carrying members of the ‘slower is better fan club’. Not all, but a good number of them.

In case you are not mocking me and asking a real question, I meant that there is a lot of repertoire that doesn’t require the maturity of at least a middle aged musician.

It’s 4 concerts, not 2. Two in Rotterdam, one in Eindhoven and one in Brussels. And the Strauss replacement was announced already quite some time ago.
I think it’s sensible to be dubious about young conductors in principle, because many of them are promoted to concert situations well beyond their experience way too soon. However, I’m all for discovering new talent, and describing a 21-year old as a “kid” in the headline is intolerably condescending, especially without knowing whether or not he deserves this gig.
Why doesn’t the west just make all Russians in the west pin a red star on their coats and paint one outside their homes. The west is behaving like the
