The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra has shown a blaze of confidence in its Chinese-born music director Xian Zhang, renewing her contract to the 2027-28 season.

She has been in the post since 2016.

Her first break was getting picked by Lorin Maazel as his assistant in 2004.

Curious that there’s nothing about her renewal on the orchestra’s social media channels. You’d think it would at least merit a tweet.

  • Michel Lemieux says:

I am surprised she hasn’t left New Jersey for greener pastures. She is a fantastic conductor

It is interesting to me that whenever media goes through the usual list of prominent female conductors, Xian Zhang is never mentioned. I know the NJ Symphony ain’t New York Phil, but surely she deserves a little more acclaim…

I’ve noticed the same thing. Surely the NJS is as fine if not better than many of the orchestras that have been led by the women on those lists. It’s kind of baffling.

  • E says:

She was wonderful, at NY Phil.
    I still remember her conducting
Stravinsky, and feeling “WHO is this?”
