  • PS says:

Virtue signaling so hard he has a mask on outside with nobody near him.

  • Gustavo says:

    Yo Yo Masked

  • Peter says:

    With face mask :-O

  • Gustavo says:

    Let Shostakovich speak!

  • Gabby says:

People in the arts really do have such an overinflated sense of self importance. So many of them think that they are the “voice of the people” when in reality they could not be more disconnected from the average person.

    • Music fan says:

True, especially second rate performers. But I would not describe Yo Yo Ma as self-important or having an inflated sense of himself.

  • CRWang says:

His instrument case is closed. No need for loose change from passers. The man didn’t graduate from Julliard.

  • Tabea says:

Has that been fact checked that it was the Ukrainian anthem that he played outside the embassy?

  • Piano Lover says:

ANOTHER one playing for(who is it now?) Oh yes:Uk-renia
He should put his mak for bidding and send them the money ..

  • Taras Bulba says:

How about a benefit concert? That might be a bit more practical.

  • Henry williams says:

People are driving a car wearing a mask. And they do
Not have a passenger with them.

  • jon says:

always right our yo yo ma!
    always good for him!
i’m so disgusted by all these social media bullshit.
give shelter to people, use you money ,go help them to get out.
stop your cello playing on the street.
    it doesn’t help anyone.

  • Just saying says:

Let’s not start with mask-bashing. Many people will probably be wearing them for quite a while yet. They know why, and it’s not your business.

    • Tony says:

A free country is being destroyed, the world is closer to total war, and some people obsess over face masks. Give me a break!

  • Tim says:

We should all feel awful for Ukraine and the tragedies unfolding there; it is a crime against humanity what Russia is doing and there should be severe sanctions.

On the other hand, it’s not surprising to see classical music’s neoliberal poster boy jumping onto the Humanitarian virtue-signaling bandwagon; without of course, thinking about how Russia has been getting humiliated for the last several decades by the west, as NATOs forces and fast nuclear strike capabilities have inched further and further east since the 90s… mostly for the reason of creating an excuse to increase military spending to our great military-industrial complex; Obviously, Putin has expansionist ambitions, but one cannot ignore NATOs role in making Putin more likely to act on them; that more people don’t understand this shows that our news media (90% of which is owned by only 5 corporate conglomerates) is doing its job of offering Americans an easy, simple, righteous and childish Manichean worldview for the sake of OUR oligarch’s profits.

Was Yoyoma playing outside the Whitehouse when the US invaded Afghanistan and Iraq, and now while our oligarchs that control the US government continue to support Saudi Arabia’s genocidal actions in Yemen (happening right now)? Of course not, which is why he should stick with the Cello playing!

  • John Borstlap says:

There cannot happen anything in the world or Mr Ma rushes in to claim attention for his virtue and to underline the impressive relevance of classical music for world events. It’s the flip side of stardom.

    • Smiling Larry says:

Wrong, and disgusting. Ma did this quietly and anonymously. We only know about it all because a passing bicyclist happened to see somebody playing a cello and stopped to listen. He didn’t know who it was. When he found out, he took a short video and sent it to a local television station, which you saw here.

The flip side of stardom is that if you’re famous you can’t do a damned thing without some keyboard warrior questioning your motives and denouncing your integrity.

  • Peter Osborne says:

    Anything for attention.

  • freddynyc says:

Ah the master self promotor at work capturing the moment again…..

  • Wim de Haan says:

Good for him, it feels he should play for all his Russian colleague musicians, who did not choose for this war. Putin never asked those musicians if he could go to War.

  • Michael says:

All the naysayers and negative comments . Everyone always has to have an opinion. Was it not great that at least a person in America can stand in front of the Russian embassy and play the cello and not get arrested . Where i live it could not happen .

    • Smiling Larry says:

Quite correct. There are lots of people protesting outside the Russian embassy these days. Somebody holds up a sign, somebody else plays the cello, etc. Along with the hundreds of thousands around the world who have expressed their displeasure in their own way, every act of protest has a cumulative impact, however futile it may seem to those to who do nothing and deem themselves worthy to judge others. I am recalling Rostropovich doing something much the same when the Berlin Wall came down, and like Ma he sure didn’t need the publicity at this point in his life. Those who think Yo-Yo Ma did this to draw attention to himself, and cares nothing about the fate of Ukraine, have lives too empty to bear imagining.

  • Curvy Honk Glove says:

Bravo young man! This is sure to leave Mr Putin questioning his life’s choices, and give him pause for a little self reflection over the current events in Ukraine.

  • Harry Collier says:

Next thing we know: Russian Roulette will be banned.

  • Matt D says:

It must be something with cellists. Once, upon hearing that a Japanese friend’s baby daughter had died, Rostropovich flew to Japan and took a taxi to perform outside the friend’s residence, only to jump right back in the taxi and return to Europe immediately after. Some speak of the sensitivity and generosity of the gesture, whereas to me it seems like grandiose narcissism. Don’t get me wrong, I revere Rostropovich, and maybe there was some OCD involved.

  • Rob Keeley says:

More pointless virtue signalling just to make these celebs feel good about themselves. utter rubbish.
