In today’s NY season announcement, a collaboration was unfurled with the Interlochen Center for the Arts.

This will include the establishment of the NY Phil Interlochen Scholars, 30 young artists associated with New York City cultural institutions, who will receive full-tuition scholarships to attend Interlochen Arts Camp in the summer of 2023.

And a concert by Interlochen Arts Academy students featuring Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra and NY Phil musicians, performing side-by-
side and conducted by Leslie B. Dunner on March 3, 2023.

Golly. My kid participated in a CSO high school concerto competition several decades ago. They couldn’t give away scholarships to Interlochen. No interest among those elite string player competitors – or their teachers. Better opportunities elsewhere. Is this an attempt to up the game??? My guess is the best of the best won’t be impressed.

For high school? What’s a better place to spend the summer?

    • Diane says:

What are you talking about? This is a great opportunity.

    • SunnyCub says:

Seriously? Interlochen doesn’t need to ‘up its game’, it still attracts students from all over the world and US orchestras are littered with Interlochen alumni including the NY Phil.

  • Emily says:

    Musicians from Interlochen are superb!!

  • Musician says:

I wonder how many people previously employed by Interlochen in the summer will be sent packing?

  • Katherine C. says:

Brooklyn school & private studio music teacher, Interlochen alumna here. This is an amazing opportunity. Two or three students from our program attend camp every summer. They all love it and return sounding great! Studying at Interlochen is expensive and worth it. These scholarships will help.

  • Consuelo says:

    Wonderful news! Lucky kids
We need more summer camps specially in the city (NYC) for lower income kids. Let them all play..!!!❤️
