The London Symphony Orchestra has switched conductors for its upcoming performance of Haydn’s Creation.

Here’s what they are telling concertgoers:

Sir Simon Rattle had a minor surgical procedure earlier this month which regrettably has not healed as quickly as expected. To allow proper time for recovery he has agreed with his doctors to cancel his conducting engagements with the LSO of Haydn’s Creation on 3 and 6 March.

The London Symphony Orchestra is delighted to announce that Harry Christophers has agreed to step in to conduct the concerts. We all wish Sir Simon a speedy recuperation.

Harry Christophers does a first-rate Creation; I did it with him in Boston and it was amazing. An inspired choice.

  • Frank Flambeau says:

Ugh. Haydn’s creation, about as uncreation-like music as exists. It’s trash.

      For entirely non musical people,yes.

    • Ed Houser says:

A great work! The opening murkiness resolving into the C major on the word “light” The joyous and innocent “Magic Flute like ensembles. The great “heavens are telling” with the building and changing and inventive chords pulling every last bit of emotion out of one in the span of seconds culminating on the second syllable of the word “display” “the firmament. The final “amen.” With a Space and then a long “Ahhhhh men”

Harry is fantastic and so nice too. Known him for years. Creation will be great and no one disappointed as a result. Wish Simon Rattle a speedy rehearsal and back soon.

Could it be his back???I noticed he was occasionally sitting on a stool during performances …Wishing him a speedy recovery.

  • Corno di Caccia says:

There are so many other wonderful Haydn choral works that do not get many performances, like The Seasons and his Missa Cellensis in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae, but The Creation is his best known choral work and Harry Christophers will do more than a decent job. I wish Sir Simon a speedy recovery.
