The Belgian conductor Dirk Brossé has broken eight months of silence to talk about a record he has made with the rap star Stromae.

He says: ‘I was contacted by the Belgian National Orchestra to do a recording for an international artist. It was very mysterious, actually a bit of a blind date.’

When the star entered the studio ‘everyone was like oh, my god.’

Brossé adds: ‘I’ve been through a lot in my career, but I must say this was one of the highlights. The hardest thing about the whole period was being silent. You can’t say anything, even when you come home from the recordings.’

The album, just out, is titled Multitude.

The first track, about suicidal thoughts, has already been viewed 25 million times.

Slippedisc.com adores Stromae. We think he’s the next Jacques Brel.

  • PCO says:

I saw Mr. Brosse conduct an amateur orchestra called Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra recently and he got lost in Eroica. I hope he didn’t get lost in this recording.

    • Benjamin Bittern says:

It is hardly an amateur orchestra. What a ridiculous statement. Originally known as Concerto Soloists Chamber Orchestra, it toured widely and has had a fine reputation. It is equivalent to the St. Luke’s Orchestra of Manhattan, available for hire as well as their concert series.

  • Piano Lover says:

A lot of ongoing talk about this “singer” STromae…
He is back because he spent all his royalties I bet.
    Much ado about nothing!

    • V.Lind says:

You really don’t live in this world, do you? This guy is MASSIVE. And he is very good.

I’m entirely with SD on this one.

    • ClassicallyTrainedStillAFanOfStromae says:

He is a creative genius! His lyrics are powerful and thought-provoking. He is charismatic and entertaining. He is a role model for many young people. What more could you want in a star?

  • John Borstlap says:

‘Suicide’ is an appropriate title for such initiatives by symphony orchestras.

  • Freewheeler says:

Working with A Belgian Rap sensation Wow! That’s as big as it gets. The rest of his career will be a long anti-climax.

  • Mikhail hallak says:

Lots of very unhappy people here! I wonder if you even checked who Stromae was and what he does. First, he is not a rapper, that should be clear. Second, his work is full a sense, intelligent and reflects society rather then himself, what is there is say here? Just bravo kid!
His come back to the stage is simply because he got very ill for a while. Google is your friend “piano lover”.
As far as an orchestra playing for a non classical musician, good for them, its a great thing for music in general. “freewheeler”: have you ever bought a tix for the Brussels Phil?
