Two musicians receive the Légion d’honneur

The composer Betsy Jolas, 95, has been appointed Commandeur de la Légion d’honneur. by the President of France in the New Year’s list.

The soprano Patricia Petibon, 51, is made a Chevalier of the same order.

    Postwebernesque music at the edge of silence, but – in contrast to Webern – with octaves here & there, which were taboo among the Viennese Trinity.

    A lot of angst and despair, but in a musical way.

    Beautifully scored. But very fragmentary, this is how it feels when walking along the empty streets of La Défense during a lockdown – anxious and alienated between the endless glass and steel buildings, a living, isolated speck among blind, dehumanizing forces, with flashes of hope to find a place to sit.
