Statement from the MU:
The MU is concerned to read about proposals to suspend school music lessons in order to redeploy music teachers to other subjects. We will advocate strongly against any suspension of music in schools.

With pupils still catching up after last year’s lengthy school closures, this is no time to limit the curriculum by cutting statutory subjects like music.

Where are these proposals coming from? Can anyone provide a link?

  • William Gross says:

    which union where?

  • Adam says:

The statement that Ofqual are proposing redeployment in ‘other’ subjects is misleading. They are proposing redeployment in ‘core’ subjects in the event of staff shortages.
They are called core subjects for a good reason and despite what some here might think, music isn’t one of them.
Difficult times call for difficult measures.

    • V.Lind says:

But how many music teachers would be equipped to teach maths or chemistry or even English lit?

    • Bone says:

I experienced this for the last few years. Fortunately, I was able to retire. Being a fine arts teacher these days takes real fortitude.

  • A Dolfadam says:

It’s ironic to read this, as the musician’s union has never done anything to protect teacher-members, no scale for private lessons, or pay by schools.
