The Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège has named Giampaolo Bisanti as its next music director, starting as soon as he can.

He is presently music director in Bari.

Bisanti replaces the popular Speranza Scapucci who declined a contract renewal in November over turmoil surrounding the recently installed Italian general and artistic director Stefano Pace.

Pace has been accused of favouring Italians over local artists. He was previously sovrintendente in Trieste.

I saw a very old school production of Les Hugenots there once – delightful, if slightly shambolically run opera house in a beautiful city

  • Forza says:

Bisanti previously came to the Liège opera for Rigoletto and Anna Bolena (as well as a tour in Oman), all went very well, and he is widely appreciated by the orchestra musicians as well as by singers. We look forward to hear the work he produces.

  • Anthony Sayer says:

    Great choice. Bisanti is excellent.

  • Wise Guy says:

Why the “just one cornetto” reference? I’m missing something here…
