The Memphis Symphony violinist Ann Spurbeck, who played sessions with Elvis Presley and Isaac Hayes, has died at 82. Her best session, she said, was the theme from Shaft.

She played 52 years in the orchestra, making her one of history’s longest serving musicians.

Her son Sam plays in the Lansing Symphony in Michigan.

    A nice long career.

My wife finds that in spite of writing two successful books on music, having played in a half dozen or so orchestras with major soloists, met John Cage and other music luminaries, did pops concerts with the likes of Shari Lewis and John Gary, and plays on a beautiful old violin, people are still most impressed and excited that she played a gig with the Moody Blues.

If the check doesn’t bounce, it’s a good gig.

I am so saddened to see this. She was my first teacher 33 years ago, once or twice a stand partner, and helped me choose the instrument I still play. A wonderful lady who really inspired me to continue with the violin. And now I recall the big strong tone she produced and wonder if I can yet match it. R.I.P.
