The central European state has gone into a two-week total lockdown, to be followed by further strictures.

The country has the third lowest vaccination rate in the EU and the highest rate of new Covid-19 infections in the world.

The chief cultural casualty is the national opera in Bratislava, a regular attraction with cheaper tickets for Viennese, who are just 45 minutes’ drive away.

But Vienna’s in shutdown, too…

Get your shots, people. It’s crucial !

    • Bone says:

Yes! Cause if you don’t, your govt will punish you in the name of safety!

      • Amos says:

In the name of preventing the unvaccinated from infecting their neighbors and preventing the likelihood of generating a new variant. Unfortunately, as of this AM a new variant has been detected in South Africa; stay tuned.

        • Amos says:

Update, the variant has been detected in Belgium. Hopefully the world will luck out and the existing vaccine-induced Ab repertoire is sufficiently reactive with the variant to prevent a catastrophe. We are close to repeating past mistakes if we don’t all get vaccinated.

          • Gus says:

The good news is that all four of the original subjects in Botswana detected with the new variant of Covid were fully vaccinated.

          • Gus says:

Doesn’t need to be new to escape the vaccines, they all do.

          • Amos says:

Nice try but more disinformation. Any anti-viral vaccine does not prevent you from coming in contact with the virus especially if morons in your society refuse to get vaccinated and thereby increase the viral titer in society. If the dose of virus you encounter exceeds the neutralizing Ab titer you might get infected but unlike your un-vaccinated counterpart you will not be hospitalized and die.

Greetings from Gibraltar! Here, we have 100% of everybody aged 12 and above vaccinated, but still lockdown. Sort it out, Michael!

      • Amos says:

What about tourists as well as those younger than 12?

        • Peter says:

          As of November 26th:

          – 578 active cases of which 14 are visitors (2,4%)

          – No statistics of age, 17% of population is under the age of 14.

      • Paul says:

Get the full picture. Vaccines clearly reduce the risk of hospitalisation and death. Gibraltar is a very good example. Only four Covid19 deaths since March, just one in intensive care at current. Sort it out, Peter!

    • Peter says:

Gibraltar says hello: 100% vaccination and lockdown as reward. Get new politicians instead, I’d say

  • Gus says:

Music has died, it’s all Covid now.

  • Frank Flambeau says:

A terrible headline, Norman. They are cancelling performances due to Covid; not culture.
