Warner Classics has signed an exclusive contract with the emigre Russian pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja to record a boxed set of the complete Mozart sonatas.

A refined and reclusive artist, Leonskaja has never been a mass producer of records, but it’s never too late to begin.

She is amazing. Her technique, stamina and musicianship are legendary. Just heard her in Cambridge playing the last three Schubert sonatas and it was a wonderful evening.

  • Jeffrey Biegel says:

Looking forward to this cycle. It’s a fabulous journey and she will surely bring something very exquisite to the sonatas.

    • Doron Cohen says:

A welcome cycle. I particularly enjoyed her duets with Richter.

That said, looking forward to more from you. Played you Four Seasons transcriptions for guests last night. Lovely.

  • Robert Roy says:

I had a very brief interaction with her at an Edinburgh Festival Queen’s Hall recital. I was standing close to the artists entrance buying a coffee when she suddenly appeared in need of a caffeine fix. Alas, she had no money on her and the young lady on coffee duty was not impressed by this woman attempting to explain that she was the artist appearing that morning!

What else could I do but gallantly step in and pay for her coffee?! She smiled and thanked me before disappearing as quickly as she’d appeared.

    She played marvellously!!

    Not waiting for this recording

  • Claremonter says:

With Sviatoslav Richter, Elisabeth Leonskaja recorded some two-piano arrangements by Grieg of Mozart piano sonatas.

  • Cathal says:

An incredible artist, her Beethoven 4th Concerto is still one of the most moving performances I have ever seen.

  • Luke Moissinac says:

She should first listen to Mao Fujita’s interpretation of all the Mozart sonatas at the Verbier Festival this year, 2021.

In my opinion, he redefined performance of the Mozart sonatas with ornamentation and extemporisation in the repeats. The sonatas sounded totally fresh and engaging. They had never sounded like this before.

  • Herr Doktor says:

I’ve heard her live twice, and she is astonishing. I’ve never understood how someone of such caliber seems to be so little-known. Her performance of (I believe) Mozart Piano Concerto #23 just so completely pulled me in, and I’ll be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of most of Mozart’s piano concertos. She is an extraordinary artist and deserves to be more widely heard. I have her CD recording of Chopin’s Nocturnes, and it’s my favorite of all.
