The Philharmonia Orchestra has shared news of the death of Gillian Eastwood, its long-serving principal second violin.

A pupil of Albert Sammons, she joined the orchestra in 1957, was appointed section leader in 1976 and left in 1985.

She is seen here with Philharmonia leader, Carl Pini.

Always recognizable on account of her red hair! May she rest in peace.

  • MacroV says:

Seeing as she was probably still relatively young after she left – 36 years ago – did she have a career in music after this?

  • Alexander Hall says:

Very sad to hear about her passing. I remember the reason she gave for leaving the Philharmonia, which was to join the ENO orchestra and not have to tour, therefore having more time to look after her sick husband. As others have remarked, in her prominent front desk position her flaming red hair was a constant delight to the eye. RIP.
