Each month the National Theatre’s invaluable website adds to its archive, both its own productions and some from other theatres. This month they have added the latest production of Tennessee Williams’ timeless masterpiece. It comes from the Young Vic and stars Gillian Anderson as Blanche DuBois, Ben Foster as Stanley and Vanessa Kirby as Stella.

As Blanche’s fragile world crumbles, she turns to her sister Stella for solace – but her downward spiral brings her face to face with the brutal, unforgiving Stanley Kowalski. This thoughtful, modern production won’t make you forget the extraordinary fragility of Vivien Leigh nor the overwhelming sexual presence of the young Marlon Brando, but it has other worthwhile attractions.
