The French-Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili has pulled out of a sold-out Barbican recital.

The hall says: Due to unforeseen circumstances, this concert on Wed 20 Oct will be postponed. All bookers have been contacted, and a new date will be communicated in due course. (This is not the case: several ticket holders tell us they have not been contacted.)

The pianist has offered no explanation on her website or social media.

Norman, get your sources right. If the Barbican can tell me (a) that the recital was never fully sold out, and (b) that it has been postponed to a future date to be determined – confirmed by her tweet – then surely they can tell you the same? Or are you just wanting to up your posting count for today – 2 for the price of one inaccurately reported story?

    • Anthony Sanderson says:

The Barbican website said that the concert was sold out. I saw it with my own eyes on the same page now says the concert has been postponed.

I have now had this email from the Barbican, “Thank you for booking tickets for the recital by Khatia Buniatishvili.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, this recital on Wed 20 Oct 2021 has to be postponed. We’re working on finding a new date, so we’ll hold on to your tickets for now and contact you again as soon as we can with the new date.

      Best wishes,
      The Barbican box office team”

    • Emily Skala says:

      Frank,
“Sold out” is a euphemism concert halls use for “a high number of tickets sold” rather than meaning that every last one has been sold. No need to be unkind. Ever.

      • TubaMinimum says:

You also tend to have “holds” put on a certain number of seats for the fundraisers, press, or some VIPs. As things approach sold out and even sometimes when they are marked sold out online, you have internal conversations about “okay, press said they can give back 5 of their holds, fundraising said they could give back 35 of theirs” and then you put those back on sale to try and maximize your box office take.

  • Mystic Chord says:

Aaaargh! That is so dissapointing – the only concert I had booked this year and was very much looking forward to it.

  • Gerry Feinsteen says:

She’s been spending a bit too much time on SD, it seems

  • Monty Earleman says:

Last minute cancellation? She wants to be the new Martha. Good luck!

  • BRUCEB says:

Why worry about accuracy when there’s cleavage?

  • Alexander T says:

    Devastating news.

  • John Borstlap says:

My fly on the wall told me it was because she couln’t find the right shoes among her collection. A soon as she finds them, she will plan a new date.

  • George deMan says:

For God’s sake, people, pianists cancel concerts. Male and female. Prima donnas and Clara Haskils. Khatia can get away with this as long as it doesn’t become a Horowitzian tic.

    • TubaMinimum says:

The timing of this would seem consistent with standard 48 or 72 hour pre-concert COVID tests as well. Given the world today, I’m surprised anyone’s mind would go to “diva” as the first cause.
