Chicago Federation of Musicians, Local 10-208, has announced the sudden death of Gary Matts, its President from 2004 – 2016.

He was a formidable drummer.

From 2013 he served as a member of the Illinois Arts Council.

Comments

  • Robert Levine says:

Does every elected union officer need to be called a “union boss?” It’s a stereotypical term every bit as offensive as an ethnic slur.

  • Harold Kupper says:

I worked with Gary both at the negotiating table and as a fellow musician. He was anything but a “boss” but rather a thoughtful, generous, intelligent and kind presence.
His style of leadership was more that of a servant/leader who always fought for needed gains on behalf the membership. He will be greatly missed, especially by those who worked closely with him.

  • Sir David Geffen-Hall says:

Great leader for Chicago musicians. Very thoughtful and patient. Stewarded many contracts for the orchestras and Broadway shows that were beneficial for all stakeholders. RIP.
