Chicago laments a union boss
RIPChicago Federation of Musicians, Local 10-208, has announced the sudden death of Gary Matts, its President from 2004 – 2016.
He was a formidable drummer.
From 2013 he served as a member of the Illinois Arts Council.
Does every elected union officer need to be called a “union boss?” It’s a stereotypical term every bit as offensive as an ethnic slur.
How can you possibly call the term union boss an ethnic slur?
I worked with Gary both at the negotiating table and as a fellow musician. He was anything but a “boss” but rather a thoughtful, generous, intelligent and kind presence.
His style of leadership was more that of a servant/leader who always fought for needed gains on behalf the membership. He will be greatly missed, especially by those who worked closely with him.
Great leader for Chicago musicians. Very thoughtful and patient. Stewarded many contracts for the orchestras and Broadway shows that were beneficial for all stakeholders. RIP.
