Rusian musicians have informed us that Alexandra Mikhailovna Vavilina died yesterday when a fire engulfed her home in St Petersburg. Widow of the legendary Leningrad Philharonic conductor Yevgeny Mravinsky, she preserved their home on the Neva River as a memorial to his achievements.
Many of their historic relics have been destroyed. Vivilivna was 93 years old and still receiving private pupils.
She was principal flute at the Leningrad Philharmonic until 1988 when Yuri Temirkanov, Mravinsky’s successor, fired her.
