An insider’s explanation by Claudio Brizi, recorded this week at the Formentelli organ Dom Bedos-Roubo of the Church of San Domenico in Rieti.

Fascinating perspective shift, with English subtitles.

Aren’t organists trained to realize this?

And, do all organists (as this one does) look mad?

  • Paul Dawson says:

Very interesting. Thanks for posting. An organist’s job must be even tougher than I had realised.

It also brings to mind the surprise hitting Rick Wright of Pink Floyd, when he played the pipe organ at the Royal Albert Hall. He was used to instant sound from his electronic organs and was thrown by the delay on the pipe organ. Mercifully, he had been prudent enough to rehearse there prior to the performance.

  • Edward says:

Well this will depend on the position of the pipes within the instrument, if quieter pipes are close to the player at the console and louder pipes further away then obviously this will happen. Every organ is different so this doesn’t happen everywhere by any stretch.
