Opera of the Week:  The Turn of the Screw by Benjamin Britten at La Monnaie

Our live  streamed opera of the week courtesy of OperaVision is based on a ghost story by Henry James, Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw is a psychological thriller in chamber opera format. The work’s layered and emotionally charged nature is an ideal fit for the director Andrea Breth. Together with the British conductor Ben Glassberg, she turns the screw of your imagination until the tension becomes unbearable.

This opera will be available via Slippedisc tomorrow, Friday 27th August at   19.00 CET,   18.00 London and  13.00 NY.

Here is a foretaste of the drama awaiting you:

Comments

  • Jack Clayton says:

Saw the 1961 movie The Innocents online recently. It was inspired by Britten’s opera as much as by the novella and tells the story rather well.

  • Bloom says:

Henry James is a master of ambiguity. One is never on rock-solid ground in his prose. And so is Britten.
