Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre Trust has confirmed the resignation of Artistic Director and Chief Executive, Fiona Allan.

She is off in October, after 16 years in Brum, to become Chief Executive at Opera Australia.

Fiona, who is originally from Sydney, succeeds Rory Jeffes, who has lasted less than four years in the job. The company is in dire financial straits, due mostly to Covid closure.

“ The company is in dire financial straits”. True.

    What can she do?

The big (expensive) productions have to go, at least for some time.
Smaller venues, fewer singers, some modern shorter operas … the classic ones will still be there when rebuilding the company is possible.

    I hope it works out.

  • Kenneth Griffin says:

Not 16 but six years at the Hippo, after a decade at Cardiff’s Wales Millenium Centre, which I suppose is now almost in Brum if Aldeburgh is now in the Fens.

  • Stuart says:

Covid closure and the willful harbouring of a child rapist, which has resulted in an expensive civil suit from the now of age victim…

Good luck to Ms Allan, bringing Woke to the old white man’s club.

  • Local says:

Talking about big expensive productions, Opera Australia is still aiming to put on the Ring in Brisbane later this year.
