The Hanns Eisler academy in Berlin reports the sudden death of Hans-Dieter Baum, its professor of conducting for 42 years. Himself a graduate of the academy, Baum was the repository of an unsullied tradition.

He was 84.

Aside from much guest conducting in the eastern part of Germany, he served as music director in Potsdam.
