Anyone remember what we paid for stehplatz in the late 1970s? I never sat, I always stood. What a time!

      Patrick is absolutely right.
If I recall correctly, a stehplatz ticket cost about 25 schillings which is about two euros today.
As a student, for an extra 10 schillings it was possible to buy any return or unsold ticket shortly before the performance which was usually in a prime position, even in the Kaiserloge.
During this period I heard some of the most unforgettable performances of my lifetime including Böhm, von Karajan, Kleiber, Maazel, Muti, Abbado and Bernstein.
This was surely the golden age before the Wiener Staatsoper became the mere TripAdvisor attraction it is today.

  • That is the market at work.

They have tracked every seat and the requests for it and ascertained that, even within a particular price level, some were still more desired than others.

The high demand ones could bear a price increase and still get sold.

The low-demand ones were perhaps not all getting sold, but maybe a price decrease might get someone to bite.
