Just in: Bucharest Opera picks Israeli artistic director

The conductor Eitan Schmeisser was today named artistic director of the Bucharest Opera House, a turbulent place at the best of times.

Schmeisser has been chorus master and head of music at Israel Opera, where he conducted many productions over the past decade.

    There is a long history of Romanian / Israeli migration and co-operation. The great Romanian conductor Cristian Mandeal was approached a few years back regarding taking on the role, but he turned it down. There’s a lot he’ll have to do, not least improve the standard of orchestral playing – from memory, it’s the worst orchestra in Bucharest.
