Climate change warning from Motown:

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra today announced that its free concert, Salute to America in Orchestra Hall, scheduled for this Sunday, July 4 at 3 p.m. has been cancelled. The recent extreme weather and rain overwhelmed the Detroit storm drain system and as a result caused flooding and water damage at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center, largely confined to the basement levels. Assessments are underway, but out of an abundance of caution the DSO has closed the building until further notice. As a result, the DSO unfortunately must cancel this Sunday’s concert.

  • Max Raimi says:

I recently perused the comments reacting to a Detroit Free Press article in which Michigan Governor Whitmer pointed out that these events will inevitably become more frequent as the climate changes. One commenter after another insisted that climate change is a fiction perpetrated by the Evil Socialist Left. I fear that our citizens lack the intellectual acumen to confront the challenges ahead.

This from the state where the FBI, state and some local police broke up a plot to kidnap and kill Governor Whitmer. The place has changed alot and not for the better since I spent some college time there. It’s too bad that’s happened because it’s a beautiful state with some really good folks living there.

Yes! And if we really wanted to get serious about climate change and reducing humanity’s carbon footprint, we would cancel all the carbon spewing activities associated with the classical music industry. Many wooden instruments and paper sheet music require resource intensive climate control in order to prevent degradation and damage, and orchestras, conductors, and soloists must frequently travel aboard hydrocarbon-consuming aircraft in order to ply their trade-craft across the globe. If climate change intervention should begin at “home”, and every little bit helps, perhaps we should take a long, hard look in the mirror. If you’re worried about future employment, it’s been suggested by those in power that you can just “learn to code” or “go to work to make the solar panels.”

I can’t tell whether you’re being serious, sarcastic, flippant, or flipped out. In any case, I suspect that you’re just nuts.

[One commenter after another insisted that climate change is a fiction perpetrated by the Evil Socialist Left.]

As this myth has become increasingly implausible over the years, we have more and more been hearing their new one: “OK, there _is_ climate change, but… but it is a completely natural development that has nothing to do with human influence. Yeah, that’s it.”

  • Bone says:

I’m sure Detroit has been investing heavily in their infrastructure, including storm drain and runoff management; thus, it is the boogeyman to blame for this debacle.
