The formidable Loretta Kleanthous has died at 89.

A concert pianist whose career was curtailed by rheumatic fingers, she founded the Junior Youth Orchestra and went on to run the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland. She also started the Irish Anti-Apartheid Movement and campaigned against nuclear weapons.

The Irish Times has a fulsome account of her richly varied life.
