Academy members of the Verbier Festival Orchestra were told today that they should leave the event without delay after an outbreak of 16 Covid infestions, which the festival says has been contained within a bubble.

The Academy musicians, aged 18 to 28, are being helped financially and administratively to leave.

The festival’s opening concert on Friday will be played by a chamber orchestra made up of the academy’s instructors, who are mature professionals.

Further changes to the programme will be decided tomorrow.

Slipped Disc has received messages from distressed young musicians over the secrecy and arbitrariness of these moves. ‘All the kids are crying and in a panic mode!’ one musician tells us.

A group of youngsters who arrived today are facing instant departure.

UPDATE: We hear that one vaccinated US wind player has come down with Covid-19 and is suffering serious breathing difficulties.

  • Ken says:

Moral of the story : get the damned vaccine shots !

    • Tamino says:

not really. apparently one of the affected, possibly the source of the virus, is a vaccinated US wind player.
The way forward seems far from clear.

  • Jan Kaznowski says:

==. ‘All the kids are crying ‘

    Boohoo

  • Derek H says:

I wonder, does that mean that the academy coaches and soloists will also leave?

It is a pity that so much disruption and disappointment has come, especially with little notice and close to the start of the events..

  • Ouch says:

    See you at Verbier 2022…

  • Couperin says:

Lucerne getting nervous now? Should have only accepted vaccinated Americans đŸ˜‰

    • Nick says:

One can get sick being vaccinated too!! And this is only one of the possibilities where the problem hides!!

      • Saxon says:

Getting vaccinated means the illness is much less serious as your immune response is much stronger. It won’t eliminate the virus. But it will, mostly, allow almost all of us to get back to normal life. Of course, some people seem to have terrified themselves sufficiently that they want to stay in the current semi-lockdown state for the rest of time.

  • Stephen Lawrence says:

Genuine problem, even within a country or state… Travelling having tested positive is a nightmare; even vaxxers are not entirely immune, tho their risk is less.

  • Gustavo says:

It is suggested that the wind player has gotten the Delta mutant bad.

Perhaps he was at Wembley like Tom Cruise?

Had the wind player gotten Pfizer by any chance?

Because there was this report from Israel suggesting only 64% efficiency of the Pfizer shot.

May better go for Sputnik next time.

    • Saxon says:

Sputnik is even worse…and the Russian authorities have a rather careless attitude to evidence from medical trials.

  • Anon says:

No vaccinated US wind player is suffering from breathing difficulties. A blatant lie.

  • Sir Simon Fauci says:

Classical music should not exist – respiratory viruses that kill the elderly are simply too dangerous.
