All advance tickets for this summer’s Bayreuth Festival sold out online in about two and a half hours, it has been officially asserted.

That’s 22,700 tickets for 25 performances.

Lucky applicants were limited to 12 tickets each. The festival is still hoping that the Bavarian government will allow it to release more seats.

I didn’t plan on going anyway.

What’s the matter with them? Don’t they know that classical music is dying and you can’t just keep offering up the same programming again and again if you want to survive?

    • Anthony Sayer says:

      They’ve clearly lost the plot.

For many it’s the place to be seen.

Yeah, sure. A provincial town in the middle of nowhere where you have to spend 3 tot 5 hours in a completely darkened theatre and then can stand outside in your tux during the breaks, that’s really a place where you go to be seen. You have never been there, you don’t know it, but you still think your irrelevant non-opinion should be shared with the world. Did you ever wonder what makes you think that?

If you think that everybody who travels to Bayreuth does so bc of pure admiration and appreciation for Wagner’s music, you are sadly mistaken. Bayreuth is partly a society “event” just like Salzburg or a Met premiere. On a first night the town is awash with photographers, lovingly documenting the competing gowns of society lionesses. AND these stupid pictures get published…

Mind you, I’m not including Chancellor Merkel in that crowd. Her interest in music in general and Wagner in particular is well known, and I seriously doubt that she cares about any society nonsense in the first place. Not so sure about many others, though.

Bravo. Thank you, I am glad I’m not the only one on this site that has had more than enough of “sue” and his ill-informed, right wing opinions.

I understand the seats are very comfy, though — they offer good lumber [sic] support 😉

    12 tickets each?!

    • Anonymous Bosch says:

There are six programmes this year. I believe each person was limited to two tickets per show, but given the way the schedule is laid out it would be difficult to attend all six, unless you like to travel often or live nearby.

    Ugly photo.

Aah, The Ride of the Merkel. I bet you’d never see Bojo at Covent Garden.

  • Player says:

Some notably daft takes here! Boris is not uncultured (at all), and Bayreuth was literally chosen to be out of the way by Wagner, so as to demand that its patrons take it seriously and not just fit it in after a day at the office or before the jockey club. The lack of air conditioning and the rudimentary German victuals only add to the sense of pilgrimage and the equality of Man!

  • Angela Giblin says:

Well, good on them! Bayreuth is best known for Richard Wagner, indeed, but it also has beautiful baroque architecture, including a stunning baroque theatre in its original condition. And in Wagner’s theatre the acoustics are, as Wagner intended, unique. It’s the only venue in the world where Wagner’s works can be heard in an authentic acoustic, which is an informative experience.
