When Kirill Petrenko was elected chief of the Berlin Philharmonic, he kept them waiting by extending his Bavarian State Opera contract by a few extra years.

Now, his successor in Munich Vladimir Jurowski has extended his deal with Berlin’s Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin until mid-2027.

It’s called hedging your bets.

  • Cynical Bystander says:

Given his lack of presence on the podium in his first season it looks like he could be keeping his options open. Munich is a hard nut to crack for incoming Maestri. He and Dorny might both be glad of an exit route.

  • Jan says:

Berlin is fortunate to have the two best young(ish) conductors.
Petrenko is incredible, but I think Jurowski’s depth and intellect can rival him in the right repertoire.
